SIBIT Bike Route

From the Baroque splendour of Siracusa past the ancient Greek Temples of Agrigento and Selinunte to the salt pans of Trapani

Bike Route in Sicily

An epic bike route along Sicily’s south coast past Baroque splendour, Mediterranean landscapes, archaeological sites, small fishing villages and large towns, long sandy beaches and white cliffs.

Most of the route is on secondary roads, some sections are along the main road SS115 with variable car traffic depending on the season (expect more traffic in the summer).

Touring or trekking bikes as well as gravel bikes recommended.

The SIBIT bike route is the first of its kind in Sicily. It is a fascinating route that connects two very different parts of Sicily and boasts wonderful views and a good insight into Sicily’s recent history and urban transformation. Funded by the EU and the government, it has been completed and signposted around 2013. Although most of the road signs are still available, the route hasn’t been maintained since the project was ended and there are some road closures along the track. The official project website www.medinbike.eu provides some useful information but it is not necessarily up to date.

We recommend you ride it from Trapani to Siracusa with the Med to your right and tailwinds (most of the times).

One of our Bike Adventure Packs includes some portions of the Sibit trail and it allows you to follow the most scenic and quiet route between Trapani and Siracusa with some detours to get the most of your biking trip in Sicily. Find out more

Public transport:

Railway station in Trapani and Siracusa or halfway in Agrigento. You can easily reach Trapani or Agrigento from Palermo and Siracusa from Catania. There are several trains during the day and in the evening and bicycles are allowed on all regional trains (not on Intercity trains etc.) at no extra cost. Check the train timetable on www.trenitalia.com

Please note: if you travel solo or as a couple, you will hardly ever have problems in finding a place for your bikes on the train, but if you are a group of cyclists please bear in mind that most trains only have limited space for bikes and book a private bike shuttle instead. Get in touch if you wish to book a bike shuttle.

Terrain: This route is almost completely on asphalt roads with a few short unpaved sections that can be avoided if you travel with a road bike. The original track crosses a beach in the province of Ragusa.

Difficulty level: easy to moderate

Bike: best for touring and trekking bikes and gravel bikes, if you don’t mind the occasional detour from the main track road bikes are suitable as well. Rent a bike for your tour along the SIBIT bike route.
